The party took some time at the Temple to Eristil under Jhod’s careful administrations, recovering from the various ailments suffered at the hands (and teeth) of the mites and their pets. Between the priests persistent offers to retire into Eristil’s service, and Mikmek the kobold’s constant jabbering and propensity to eat everything, it didn’t make for the most relaxing week.

Towards the end, Ted burst from the forest like a mad man with a tale about missing for weeks and forced into manual labor. He claims it was in a mine to the southeast.

Well rested, the group headed out to complete their missions: Recover Svetlana’s Ring and Pacify the Sootscale Kobolds. The plan was to side with the chieftain against the sorcerer Tartuk, stopping the civil war that had the kobolds riled up, and recover the ring in the bargain.

En route to fulfilling these objectives, the party is attacked by wolves in the night. All are slain except for one that Sear incapacitated. Ted sets out to tame the wolf for Rudi. Instead Hydrastis befriends the animal.

The party continues until they come upon a mine. The weathered entrance is obscured in the mountainside with a faded, and fallen sign reading Oak Top Silver Mine. A mite is caged just outside the entrance, a testament to the feud between the two parties.

Friends of Mikmek lead them through the tunnels and the caves, around the traps, all to meet Chief Sootscale. They’re led to a room with sharptoothed, reptilian-looking demon statues caked in blood. Here stood the chieftain with his black scales, resplendent in a crocodile skull helmet adorned with feathers.

With Cassius leading the negotiations, and Sear translating, they find out that the sorcerer Tartuk has been sacrificing kobolds to appease a demon. He brokers a deal with the chief; the idol, and their help to remove Tartuk for an end to the raids on the surrounding areas.

Chief Sootscale agrees, and immediately smashes the idol on the floor. Leading the charge through the tunnels, the kobold’s witnessing the exchange scatter before the party. The chief leads them to Tartuk’s quarters, filled the sorcerer and his glassy eyed followers. Tartuk’s purple scales make him stand out from the others, even as he’s dropping foul items into a bubbling cauldron. The ensuing fight is short and one sided; his followers are dispatched quickly, and the sorcerer himself is backed into an alcove where Ted put a boot on his throat and split Tartuk’s head in half, along with his crow familiar.

Searching the room they found:

  • 7,420 C.P.
  • 2,132 S.P.
  • 302 G.P.
  • A masterwork Light Metal Shield (Ted)
  • 7 Magical Crossbow Bolts (+1 Flaming Bolts) (Faedrian)
  • Magical Boots (Unidentified)
  • Soiled Leather Bag
  • A bag containing: 231 S.P., 249 G.P., 13 P.P., and a plain brass ring inlaid with a pearl
  • A pinch of magical Dust

Rudi also discovered a mouldy old tome.

On Tartuk himself:

  • Masterwork Cold Iron Sickle
  • Magical Bracers (Unidentified)
  • Magical Cloak (Unidentified)

In the spirit of friendship, Cassius believed they should leave the copper and silver behind to help kickstart their trade with the surrounding settlements. That way they could start their mining operation more quickly. Not everyone agreed with this generosity. Then he bequeathed the Oak Top Silver Mine to the Sootscales and claimed were under their protection while they maintained their friendship. Laden with loot, drunk on victory, they headed back to Oleg’s.
